They call me the drifter
27 10 2012“Hey Michael, you available for a shoot next week? We’ll have 2 guys in a car so it might be going out of range for your wireless at camera, can you handle something like this? There will be a GoPro camera in the car as well.” Thats the email I get. My job is all about problem solving and as I’m reading the email ideas are already flowing. My solution flows like a river in a quick reply all, signed, “lets rock and roll!”. And rock and roll we did!

Interesting week of characters
16 08 2012This past week was full of interesting characters to put microphones on.
First up: Vice President Joe Biden
A stop in NC on his political campaign got him mic’d up with one of my zaxcom transmitters.
Next up: Dan Ariely
The job was a corporate video, I don’t remember the exact details but I can tell you that this dude is cool. Very interesting cat. He’s a professor at Duke University covering psychology and behavioral economics. Basically he studies lying and cheating and why we do it. All kinds of cool experiments. He’s done some TED talks that have had a looooot of views. By far the most interesting dude to get mic’d up this week. Check him out.
And finally, we have: Billy Burke
Billy is mostly well known for his role in the teeny vampire heart throb Twilight Saga. But he’s now starring in the new NBC show REVOLUTION. The job was an EPK(electronic press kit, or promo video if you will) for NBC on the set of the show, which is shooting in the Wilmington, NC area. Check out the extended web trailer for the show, looks to be interesting!

Promo items arriving this week!

Fresh threads and sticky stickers will be arriving at Mangler Mixer world headquarters this week. If you’re at NAB next week in Vegas hit me up. I’ll have a small number of shirts and large bounty of stickers for the hand outs. I’ll get a paypal button setup shortly for shirts. I can only afford to give away a certain number as I’ve went baller status and had them printed on American Apparel tri-blend shirts in athletic grey. Shout out to my homies over at Mindsetgear for their screen printing skills and Contagious Graphics for their awesome sticker printing.

New light weight run n gun kit
21 11 2011So I built up a sweet little run and gun kit for those long days with boom and a couple of wireless.
So I’ve got a Sound Devices 302 mixer to two wireless transmitters for camera hop, also running to a tascam dr40 recorder for backup(or simple dslr gigs). For my wireless its a Lectrosonics SRa dual channel receiver with SMV transmitters coupled with a selection of Sanken, Countyman or Tram lavaliere mics. And of course my Sennheiser mkh60 shotgun with a K-tek 152cc 12′ boom pole. All powered by one NP-1 style battery, which on the 12 hour day I worked on Saturday for the Golf Channel, only used 25% of the battery. My next upgrade will be adding one of Cable Techniques emergency Rx devices to add a 4th channel into the 302. Oh yeah, and its super light! My shoulders felt nothing at the end of the day, can’t say the same for my feet tho..

ESPNU’s Road Trip
4 10 2011Look Ma! I’m on the teevee!
Had the pleasure to work with Beaudry Film works this past weekend on their show Road Trip for ESPNU. The Show will be airing this Wednesday at 6:30pm eastern time on ESPNU(its usually at 7:30 but this week there is a schedule change).
Here’s the camera man, Robb Shaw and myself after getting rained on in 40 degree temps, aka not so fun. But other than that, an awesome crew and a good time hanging around Blacksburg and VA Tech!

Using rechargeables for mother earf

I try to be at one with nature as much as I can. I also don’t like spending lots of hard earned benjamins. So to best achieve this I have been using rechargeable batteries. More info after the jump.
